Cricket Betting: Features and Rules

Popularity and Rich Heritage

The origins of cricket lie in England. This aristocratic game became a national jewel. With the expansion of British colonies across the globe, cricket traveled with them. It is particularly popular in India. It's safe to assume that because of the country's billion-plus population, cricket is the second most popular sport in the world.

Now, millions of fans not only view the game but also enjoy placing bets via mobile means, with apps like the betway app giving easy access to cricket betting anywhere.

The game is played between two teams with eleven players per team. The team that scores most runs using a bat wins. The field runs along a grass area with an uneven oval shape.

In contradistinction to the majority of other sports, cricket is not played during any specific season. Cricket is played all year round, which is pleasing to fans as well as bookmakers.

There is an International Council that organizes tournaments. There exists a Code of Conduct for players on the field promulgated by the Council. Furthermore, it fights against corruption and appoints match umpires.

But for some reason that no one can understand, the Council does not regulate matches between teams that are both members of the Cricket Council. Nor does it develop game rules.

It is done by an independent organization – the Marylebone Cricket Club. The largest governing authority of cricket has 106 federation representatives. It was founded by Australian, English, and South African delegates.

Variety of Regulations

As cricket spread all around the globe, each area developed its own format. Therefore, a newcomer can be confused by diversity in rules.

Now, there are three main formats:

First-Class Cricket.
A tournament can last from three to five days in this format. It is used traditionally for Test matches or national championships. The main feature of this format is length. This format is very slow, as teams take well-thought-out tactics into account.

T20.
This format is significantly different. The game is fast and extremely fun. T20 is the most popular watched version by followers across the world. Games are short, with two innings in all—one attack for each team. A T20 game lasts approximately three and a half hours on average.

One Day Internationals (ODI).
This format takes benefit from the strengths of both of these. ODI matches are played in a day, with sufficient action and gambling. The match consists of 40 or 50 overs.

Rules of the Game

As discussed earlier, the rules of the game are managed by two institutions: the Marylebone Cricket Club, which sets the rules, and the International Cricket Council, which regulates Test and ODI matches.

Each type has its own specialties, e.g., number of overs and innings per match.

There are two sides, each with eleven players. A side includes a bowler (who rolls the ball), ten fielders, and two attacking batsmen. The side is not fixed: there can be substitutes during the course of the game, e.g., due to injury. There are two umpires who referee the match and indicate scores or breaking of rules.

As opposed to football, cricket is divided not into halves but into innings—periods when one side bats. There is one or two innings in a match. Depending on the type, deliveries are restricted either by time or by the overs (six deliveries). In case there is a wide gap of runs between sides, there is a follow-on (extra inning) declared.

Batting teams take turns. One wishes to make runs as many as possible in an over. The batsman also desires the ball to go so far that time is taken to reach the other end before the fielding team can catch it.

Runs are accumulated during the game. There are also general rules, such as catching the ball on the ground.

The first team's inning goes on until there are ten batsmen out. The teams change their sides, and the second team is given a turn at bat.

Cricket Bets

There are different types of cricket bets. Rules of cricket could be challenging at first. The game is not like baseball or football. But once the smaller details are learned, the bettor can bet.

Handicap bets are common in cricket. They may vary based on the nature of the match.

Run handicap allows the addition or deduction of a number from the team's final score. Number wicket handicaps also exist.

Not all bookmakers offer this type of bet, but one can sometimes catch sight of it.

Match Result Bets

The simplest form of bet is on the match result: team one wins, team two wins, or on a draw.

Before putting down the bet, check the format of the match.

For example, in first-class and Test matches, there is a chance for a draw. Though rare, more so than in sports like hockey.
In ODIs and T20s, winning can be only for either team—there are no draws.

The concept of betting on a draw in cricket, then, is not favorable. Statistically, they're rare, and two forms don't even have provisions for them.

Total Bets

A cricket total bet is the number of runs in a game. There are various total bets offered by bookmakers. One is the individual total – the total runs by one team.

Individuals also like totals for some length of time, like after some overs or before losing the first wicket.

If you do decide to bet on the totals, keep in mind some things. Start with the tournament format, since each one has its own rules—even the points system can vary. And review the previous teams and previous match statistics.

Other Bets

Other bets are not always available on a bookmaker's line. They usually appear for large tournaments. Some popular options include larger/smaller totals and handicaps.

The most popular option is the forecast of the exact score—or whether it will be odd or even. These are hard to predict and depend mainly on fortune, so gamblers make a choice on intuition.

Another category of bet depends on match statistics. During big games, you can have odds on the best duo—a bet on the most successful player combination. It is based on thorough knowledge of team lineups and players' experience.

You can bet on the first innings as well. This is typical in Test matches, yet winners are not chosen for days.

Additionally, wagers for the long term can be put down, such as predicting the tournament or championship winner prior to it.

Special Bets

Cricket is unorthodox, so bookmaker lines are not restricted to regular types of bets. Unusual in-game situations allow special predictions.

For example, you can bet on the leading batsman or leading bowler. Keep track of player statistics to know who is most likely to lead the ranking.

Another popular among the markets is the coin toss. Games begin with a toss to know whose turn it will be to bat first. With only two teams, odds are simple. These bets are very popular when big tournaments are taking place.

Just as you can predict the match MVP in esports—usually from the winning team.
